Door Of Hope Australia (DOHA) is a child-focused, non-profit, non-governmental organization, established to help alleviate the suffering caused by poverty, through projects such as: education, health, water & sanitation, vocational training and income generation.

DOHA was established in 1996 and our mandate is to improve living conditions for children within communities in developing nations, especially those affected by extreme poverty and war. We aim to do this through projects that enable children access to education, health & medical care, improved water & sanitation and income generation for their primary carers.

Currently DOHA is supporting projects in Fiji, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Uganda, Kenya, Cairo and Southern Sudan.

Vision
Children in every nation will have access to education, nutrition, medical care and protection from war, abuse and exploitation.

Mission Statement
To preserve, improve and sustain the quality of life of children, in their communities.

To preserve: maternal/child health, nutrition, water, immunisation;
To improve: sanitation, education, shelter, medical care, trauma counselling;
To sustain: training, income generation, good use of natural resources, ongoing support and facilitation.

Objectives
  • To support projects that provide education, medical and health care, water & sanitation and homes for orphaned & abandoned children.
  • To establish projects that empower communities to improve the living conditions for their children.
  • To assist in rebuilding communities in times of disasters, natural or man made.
  • To advocate on behalf of the children in our support, raising awareness of the issues they are facing.
  • To raise finance for projects through: donations, fundraising events, corporate sponsorships/grants and government funding.

Philosophy

We believe that every child has a right to quality of life; this includes freedom from discrimination, prejudice, abuse, exploitation and the factors that perpetuate the causes of poverty; for instance illiteracy, preventable diseases and malnutrition.

We believe that to cause permanent and effective change in a child's living conditions:

  • We need to look beyond the surface and consider the child in it's cultural, spiritual and historical context; a holistic approach.
  • Offer training programs for primary carers and staff to ensure that the child receives adequate nutrition, sanitation, medical care as well as opportunities to explore, play and learn.
  • Partner with families, communities, church groups and other organisations in caring for their children.
  • Support projects that are sustainable, and promote development within the community at large.

Education is the key to breaking the poverty cycle and we are committed to giving children opportunities to attend and complete school.

History

In 1996, the idea for starting a children's charity began on a short-term trip into Indonesia. Bryan Grasby, Michelle Harry and Sam Hanna accompanied Barry Silverback to Irian Jaya and whilst there, stayed at an Orphanage. It was at that time Bryan and Michelle began discussing ways we could help the children more directly. After returning to Australia we began brainstorming ideas for a charity and began to put into place the framework for what is now the Door of Hope. The name comes from a book in the Bible called Hosea, chapter 2 verse 15: '... And make a valley of Achor (literally means trouble) to be a door of hope.' The whole concept of the Door of Hope is tied up in that statement; we are opening a door of hope for children who have thus far lived in a place of trouble.

All our initial aims and purpose statements were coming together from this time. The members of our Board were selected and approached and the heart of constitution was literally typed on a short-term trip to the Philippines in 1999.

Later in 1999, Bryan Grasby and Barry Silverback went to Africa for a scouting trip of Orphanages in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Bryan also accompanied Barry into Sri Lanka on two occasions to visit the Children's Homes.

Each consecutive year, we continued to travel overseas on Short-term trips and by 2000 we had our inaugural 'Door of Hope' trip into Philippines. We were a part of a medical team going to the different Islands in Philippines to help the local Doctors and run medical clinics in the outer villages.

In May 2000, we held our first Board meeting and registered with the Australian Tax office as an 'income exempt charity entity' and received our 'ABN'. In 2001, we opened our first bank account and began a small core group who met each Thursday night to work on practical tasks for the Door of Hope, to enable the charity to progress.

At this time, the projects supported by the Door of Hope were begun by Barry Silverback through the CRC Churches International. For a time, we supported a work in Mozambique in Africa, milk program and medical clinics. Unfortunately, the couple we were partnering with had to return permanently to Australia in April 2002. As the Mozambique Government then took on the project we were forced to withdraw.

In 2002, we returned to Philippines for a follow-up trip and later in the year went to Fiji to visit the Pre-Schools. In July of 2002, Michelle resigned from her position of 10 years and completed a 6 week full-time course through Beth Raham (CARTC Children at Risk Training Course) and after returning from Fiji began volunteering full-time at Door of Hope as Project Manager.

We received our certificate of Incorporation and registered as a charity with Consumer Affairs in April of 2003; approved for Merchant numbers with B/C, M/C, V/C, Amex & D/Club in May of 2003 and approved as a signatory to the ACFID code of conduct in December of 2003. Currently, we are moving from welfare based projects to Community Development Projects, as we recognise that sustainable, effective change is only possible when people are empowered to care for their own.
